Goodness of vitamin C



“Drink some hot lemon water” is the advice we get from all sorts of people when we get sick with a cold. We get it from our family, relatives and friends and surprisingly, on rare occasions from strangers too! It gets so annoying that often we think if it never occurred to them that we’ve already got that before. But the fact is we hand out the same advice whenever we get the opportunity!

Lemon has the magical vitamin C which is believed to help fight the cold by shortening their duration and lightening their severity. Vitamin C is also known as Ascorbic Acid and plays an important role in the development of collagen. Collagen is a protein that gives structures to bones, cartilage, muscle, and blood vessels. The benefits of vitamin C do not end there though. Its other benefits can be listed as below:

  • Vitamin C may help prevent lead poisoning, and some scientists suppose it can be used in the treatment of cancer.
  • Vitamin C serves a predominantly defensive position in the body.
  • It is a great antioxidant and helps defend the body against pollutants.
  • It helps in the prevention of blood clotting and bruising, and strengthening the walls of the capillaries.
  • Vitamin C helps in the prevention of degenerative diseases - such as cataracts, certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases.
  • Ascorbic acid promotes healthy cell growth, proper calcium absorption, normal tissue growth and restore - like healing of wounds and burns.
  • Vitamin C is required for healthy gums, to help defend against infection, helps decrease cholesterol level, high blood pressure and avoids arteriosclerosis.

Humans, unlike most other animals, do not generate their own vitamin C, and they need to take it through foods sources which are rich in Vitamin C. Some common foods rich in vitamin C are amla, oranges, mangoes, guavas, pineapples, tomatoes, cabbages, cauliflowers, broccolis and chilies.
