5 Business Laptops

-CNET Review

A laptop can be a great choice for work, whether your job takes you around the world or just to the conference room down the hall. But business-oriented laptops rarely grab headlines, which makes it tough to discover new models as they're introduced. Fortunately, we've recently reviewed a number of business laptops and -- depending on your line of work -- any of the five laptops below would make a solid choice for your mission-critical tasks.

What makes a business laptop? Aside from running Windows Vista Business, work-oriented laptops are usually engineered to deliver the best performance, battery life and security bang for your buck. They're often more sturdily constructed than their consumer counterparts, and sometimes they are backed by lengthier warranties. The trade-off: Business laptops usually don't offer the same level of media and entertainment features that you'd find on, say, an HP Pavilion, and their subdued designs might not prompt many jealous stares at the airport. But take it from us: You won't even miss those flashy features as you plow through your to-do list on one of these systems.

1. Fujitsu LifeBook P7230

The sleek-looking, ultraportable Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 will turn heads with its polished design, but its middling performance makes it best suited for basic office tasks. Comes with: Core Solo 1.2GHz, 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD, and Vista Business.

2. Lenovo 3000 V100 0763

If you can carry a little extra weight in an ultraportable, the Lenovo 3000 V100 is a well-appointed business laptop that offers solid performance for a competitive price. Comes with: Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 2GB RAM, and 120GB HDD.

3. Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Tablet

The lightweight Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Tablet now runs Windows Vista -- and remains one of the best convertible tablets on the market.

4. Toshiba Tecra A6-EZ6411

The Toshiba Tecra A6 is a well-designed business laptop that delivers good performance for the money and a host of business-friendly security features, but its glossy display will prove to be a deal breaker for many.

5. HP Compaq 6515b

The HP Compaq 6515b notebook computer offers enterprise-level features and decent performance at a price that's friendly to small business.
