Indoor pollution
The polluted air of Kathmandu isn't exactly inviting for those who believe in breathing clean air. Many would prefer to stay indoors than to venture out and risk themselves to health problems. What they might not know is that they could be breathing polluted air while staying inside too!
In the colder seasons to save energy and to keep the rooms warm, many households restore to shutting doors and windows. An air-tight house might be good from an energy-use point of view. But if the house is too air-tight, it can cause indoor air quality problems. Indoor pollution sources that release gases or particles into the air are the primary cause of indoor air quality problems in homes. Inadequate ventilation can increase indoor pollutant levels by not bringing in enough outdoor air to dilute emissions from indoor sources and by not carrying indoor air pollutants out of the home. High temperature and humidity levels can also increase concentrations of some pollutants. If too little outdoor air enters a home, pollutants can accumulate to levels that can pose health and comfort problems. Many modern homes are built to be "air-tight" for energy-saving purposes, and unless they are equipped with special mechanical means of ventilation, the best-built homes may have higher pollutant levels than older homes.
Indoor air pollution can have immediate effects on health like irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, headaches, dizziness and fatigue. Extended exposure could result in health problems such as asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis on the long run and result in respiratory diseases, heart disease and cancer. If the following signs are visible in your home, your house is in need of proper ventilation.
  • Moisture condensation on windows or walls
  • Smelly or stuffy air
  • Dirty air cooling equipment
  • Appearance or molds on books, shoes, or other items
